Excellent apprenticeship outcomes for the county council

Leicestershire County Council is celebrating success this National Apprenticeship Week 2025 and reflecting on the positive impact apprenticeships have on local government careers.

A top national performer for training, the county council currently employs 225 people who are undertaking varied apprenticeships at different levels, from chefs and forest operatives to social workers and business analysts. Offering staff the opportunity to expand their skills helps us to retain workers for longer, as well as keeping public services as efficient and up to date as possible.     

Rated ‘excellent’ as a training provider by both apprentices and employers, apprenticeship standards consistently surpass the national average.

  • Adult Care Worker Apprentice: 92.3% achievement rate (national average is 39.3%)
  • Business Administrator Apprentice: 100% achievement rate (national average is 63.3%)
  • Customer Service Practitioner Apprentice: 100% achievement rate (national average is 57%)

Lillie Green works as a Public Health Programmes Coordinator at the council, where she recently completed a degree apprenticeship. She said: “I used to struggle with self-confidence and higher education seemed overwhelming, but doing a degree apprenticeship changed everything for me.

“As a single mum of two, there were challenges along the way, but I was well-supported at work and am incredibly proud of the first-class degree I accomplished, alongside a job I love.”

Finley completed an apprenticeship at the county council and is now a Senior Technician for Traffic and Safety. He said: "I would highly recommend an apprenticeship. It’s an excellent way to grow professionally while earning valuable experience and qualifications.

“It allows for practical, hands-on learning, whilst also exploring different areas of work and being paid a wage in the process."

Councillor Pam Posnett, Lead Member for Staff Relations, added: “I’m so proud of the council’s strong track record in successful apprenticeships. This enables staff members to upskill whilst they work and helps us retain our valued workforce.

“I would encourage anyone interested in developing career skills in a supportive environment to consider our varied job opportunities today.”
