A military stables which has been training and caring for horses deployed in defence for more than a century was last week recognised with a special Green Plaque.
It is the home of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and houses a veterinary hospital.
The barracks has had a vital and long-serving role in the defence of the nation, and on operations around the world. It was recognised with the unveiling of a Green Plaque by Leicestershire County Council last week on Thursday August 25.
During its long history, the Remount Barracks has cared for some famous animals, including the Household Cavalry horse Sefton, who was badly injured in the Hyde Park bombing in 1982.
The site is unique within the Ministry of Defence as it has been home to military animals for more than a century, and the stables are unique within the UK because there has been no break in their use for military horses during their 119 years of service.
The military stables was nominated for a Green Plaque by the DATR, which said in its nomination: “The unit firmly believes this building is at the heart of 119 years of incredible history for Melton Mowbray and should be recognised for the Green Plaque awards not only to represent all serving soldiers past and present but to remember the serving animals of the first and second world wars who subsequently lost their lives to serve and protect the country in times of need.”
I offer my absolutely heartfelt thanks to the Defence Animal Training Regiment. We wouldn’t be unveiling the green plaque today if it weren’t for the nomination of the military stables by the regiment.
The aim of these plaques is to bring people together to nominate and vote for historic people and places which deserve recognition. The military stables were a very popular choice among the people of Leicestershire so we’re honouring this historic landmark.
This green plaque award honours not only the military stables but also the animals themselves who have shown courage and determination in serving their country.
