Showcasing magic of 'well-loved' Ladybird books

If you go down to Leicestershire’s museums this summer, you’re sure of a big surprise!

Ladybird book at museum

Three of the county council’s museums are this summer showcasing the much-loved Ladybird Books series, covering different elements to the books.

Events at Charnwood Museum, Melton Carnegie Museum and Harborough Museum will be full of nostalgia for the books, which were printed in the county at Ladybird’s former site in Loughborough.

Across the museums, you’ll be able to see:

  • "Well-Loved Bears: A celebration of bears, teddies and Ladybird Books" at Charnwood Museum, which celebrates its 25th birthday by bringing together adorable and recognisable teddy bears, including the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Rupert, Teddy Ruxpin and Winnie the Pooh. The exhibition is open until Saturday 2nd November.
  • ‘Well-Loved Tales” will feature at Melton Carnegie Museum, showing stories from 27 Ladybird books, which began in 1964 with the publication of Cinderella and also includes Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack & the Beanstalk, among many others. Visitors can also play dress up and become a fairytale character. Open until Saturday 14th September.
  • “People at Work” is the focal point at Harborough Museum, which considers how attitudes have changed since the publication of the first Ladybird title over 60 years ago. Original illustrations and museum objects will be on display as well as local community portrait photos and stories. It will be open until Saturday 1st February 2025.

Councillor Christine Radford, cabinet member for adults and communities, said: “This is a trip down memory lane, and a chance to enjoy three fantastic days out across Leicestershire. I’m so glad we’ve been able to bring these exhibitions to our museums and I’m hopeful everyone gets a chance to attend.”

All of the exhibitions are completely free to enter. Find out more about opening times and the exhibitions on the museum’s websites: Charnwood Museum, Melton Museum and Harborough Museum.
