With festive feasts planned over Christmas it’s time to learn to love your leftovers.

A series of videos and recipes are available online to help people transform their Christmas leftovers into tasty dishes.

The tried and tested recipes from the Leicestershire Waste Partnership include roast vegetable frittata and turkey and leek pie.

“Food waste across the country increases by 80% across the Christmas period so now is a really important time to think about waste and reuse.

“An estimated 230,000 tonnes of Christmas food will find its way into bins across the UK this year so we hope that these recipes and tips will help people to look at their leftovers in a different way.”

Andrew Harper, Waste Partnership Manager

Other tips for reducing waste this Christmas are:

  • Buy less food by planning your meals in advance
  • Donate excess foods to foodbanks who are always in need of in-date, non-perishable food particularly during the festive season. Find a nearby foodbank online
  • Use the freezer to help you to reduce food waste and save money. Label your tubs and bags so you don’t end up with unidentifiable food
  • If you have a compost bin in your garden don’t forget to throw in your fruit and vegetable peelings. If you haven’t got a compost bin, consider buying one
