Have your say on proposed 40mph speed limit along A50

50mph speed limit along parts of the dual carriageway could be reduced to 40mph

A reduction in the speed limit along a stretch of the A50 in Leicestershire is being proposed.

From Friday, 13 May, Leicestershire County Council will consult residents and motorists on reducing the 50mph speed limit on Bradgate Hill and Markfield Road as part of a review of the road between the Field Head roundabout and Glenfield Hospital.

Two options for the reduced speed are being put forward, option A would see seven turning points across the central reservation closed, with gaps near the Scania depot and Groby Parks Farm left open. While option B would see nine turning points (including the two above) closed.

Councillor Peter Osborne, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We’ve listened to feedback and concerns from residents and drivers about speeds along the A50.

“By standardising the speed limit along this section of the dual carriageway we hope to make it easier for drivers to recognise the speed they should be travelling along the road.

“Although accident rates along the A50 are well-below the national average, we have to recognise the thoughts of the community and motorists who use this route every day. Consulting on the proposals will allow us to see what the appetite for this change is.”

In 2013 the council introduced a number of 40mph zones along the route following requests from residents concerned about safety, this introduced three different speed limits along the route.

In both options the change would apply to the road along Bradgate Hill, Markfield Road, Groby Road and Leicester Road.

The section of the A50 featuring the national speed limit would not be impacted by option B. Option A, however, suggests reducing the speed along the northbound carriageway to 40mph at its junction with Markfield Road. This change would allow for the gap in the central reservation to stay open and support drivers entering the dual carriageway from the slip road.

The consultation lasted for four weeks, a decision will be made in the coming weeks.
