Staying safe resources for people with learning disabilities

We have put together some useful information and resources to help our Board and Locality Group members stay safe.

There are things we can do to help us stay safe when we are out and about, online or at college / day opportunities - here are some helpful resources to keep you safe:

Keeping safe online

Mencap has some great tips on how to stay safe online, such as making sure you don't give your personal details, like your name, phone number and bank details, to someone you don't trust. Mencap also offers free training designed for people with learning disability on how to use the internet safely.

Beyond Bullying provides some easy-read resources to help you keep safe online - learn more about the meaning of some hard words, cyberbullying and what you can do if you're being bullied online, keeping your personal information safe, sharing photos and videos, and using social networking sites safely.

Mate and hate crime

To report a crime to the police, please call 101 if you think a crime has been committed but there is no immediate danger, or call 999 if a crime is being committed or someone is in immediate danger.

What is mate crime?

Mate crime is when someone says they are your friend, but they do things that take advantage of you, like often asking you for money.

A real friend doesn't need to be bought, and someone who takes your money, asks you to pay for lots of things, or makes you feel uncomfortable, isn't a true friend.

If someone who says they are your friend hurts you, steals from you, or makes you do something you don’t want to do, you should tell to someone you trust right away.

What is hate crime?

Hate crime is when someone does something to hurt someone because of who they are - such as because of their race, sexuality, or disability.

If someone is mean to you because of your learning disability, tell someone you trust and report it to the police. See Safeguarding Adults - Say No to Adult Abuse for further advice.

Keep Safe Places

If you're out and about and need to go somewhere to feel safe or get help for a few minutes, you can find a Keep Safe Place - learn more about this and how to get your Keep Safe Card.
