Supported Lodgings Hosts are important support systems for our looked-after young people, offering help and guidance, and leading them into independent adulthood. They encourage the development of essential life skills, including cooking, budgeting, and decision making.

Hear how our Supported Lodgings Scheme has benefitted Leicestershire young-person, Christopher*:

I have been with my Supported Lodgings Hosts since September 2021.

On my initial visit to meet them, I actually jumped on my pushbike and went for a ride because I felt really nervous about leaving the children’s home. They were very understanding of why I did this, and suggested they could come and meet me in my environment. We bonded straight away, and 3 years later I am still with them - they treat me like part of the family.

When I first arrived, I had boundaries and rules put in place. I respected this because although in the children’s home they were in place, there was always a lot of challenging times with other residents, including myself!

From day 1 of arriving here I have learnt so much. My independent skills are very good - I can cook, budget financially, save money, prioritise bills, and do simple repairs and maintenance (like re-wiring a plug, or putting shelves up). I have also completed Level 2 Carpentry and Level 2 Painting and Decorating, and now work full-time.

I like to do a bit of gardening, and happily volunteer my help! My Supported Lodgings Hosts and I like to go fishing regularly, and we can be very competitive about it. I am also involved in their family get-togethers, like barbecues and days out.

My confidence has gone from very little to amazing. They do not judge me - they listen and talk, and the support is fantastic.

Thank you to you both. I would not be the person I am today without your guidance and the environment that you have given me.

Please consider being a Supported Lodgings Host. You get a lot of support, challenges, and achievements, but most of all satisfaction in knowing that you have made a difference to a young person’s life.
