Citizenship ceremonies

The citizenship ceremony is the final step to becoming a British citizen.

A citizenship ceremony is a formal welcome and introduction into our community alongside other new citizens with a shared experience. The ceremony aims to be an enjoyable and meaningful experience to encourage you to get involved with your local community.

You can only book a ceremony with us if Leicestershire appears on your Home Office confirmation.

For Leicester City residents, please book a citizenship ceremony with Leicester City Council.

Book a ceremony

You can only book a ceremony if you have received your invitation email or letter from the Home Office. You must attend a ceremony within 3 months of receiving your invitation.

If you have not received your invitation, or you have any questions about your application status, please email citizenship.support@homeoffice.gov.uk

Book your ceremony by calling 0116 305 5990.

Our ceremonies are held at:

Leicestershire Register Office
Anstey Frith House
Glenfield
LE3 8RN

What to bring

When you attend your ceremony, please bring:

  • your approval email or letter from the Home Office (we can look at this on your mobile device)
  • a form of photographic ID (e.g. a passport, driving licence or Residency card)

The ceremony

Citizenship ceremonies are held face-to-face. There is no charge for a group ceremony, however, there is a fee of £85 for private individual ceremonies and £160 for private couple ceremonies. You can bring up to 3 guests to accompany you, including children.

Each group ceremony has space for up to 25 new citizens. The ceremony starts at 5:30pm, and you can arrive from 5pm to allow you enough time to sign in and enjoy some refreshments.

The ceremony will last about 30 minutes and is led by a Deputy Superintendent Registrar with a representative from the Leicestershire Lieutenancy Office also in attendance.

During the ceremony you will be asked to swear or affirm an oath, along with a pledge of allegiance. You will be called up individually to receive your certificate and a small gift. There will be an opportunity at the end of the ceremony to take some photos.
