Foster carer Leanne on transforming young lives

Event at County Hall to promote role of specialist foster carers

Leanne, a Leicestershire specialist foster carer

Foster carer Leanne has this week described changing the life chances of teenagers as the most rewarding part of her role as a specialist carer.

Leanne was one of the county council’s first pathway carers, the group of individuals who help to chart a young person’s course towards adulthood.

She has talked about her role in one of a series of videos launched to reflect the hugely rewarding nature of being a specialist foster carer.

The videos, featuring existing carers who have taken on a mixture of specialist roles, have been issued ahead of an event on Thursday, 26 September at County Hall in Glenfield (6.30pm), promoting current opportunities within specialist foster care.

Leanne said, in a written testimonial: “The most rewarding aspect of being a pathway carer is working with young people, changing their life chances and making a positive impact on their social mobility.

“Being the ‘secure base’ of a young person’s life encourages them to aspire and believe they can achieve a positive, rewarding future - despite the turbulent backgrounds they may have come from.

“I’ve encountered many children and know how positive role models and the understanding that ‘someone believes in you’ can make a huge impact on how a young person can start to perceive themselves. Perceive their future

“If you have skills and expertise with working with vulnerable children and can offer an environment to help calm and develop a young mind, this could be your next career move," added Leanne, who is one of a number of specialist carers due to speak at the event.

This particular event has a focus on the very important work of specialist carers, who will work with some of our most complex and traumatised young people. If you have experience of working or caring for young people at a critical time in their lives, then pathway caring may be perfect for you and we would love to hear from you.
