Exciting new service brings culture to you

Bringing the joy of art, heritage and culture into homes

Culture to you officers handling objects

An inspiring new free scheme is enabling people to experience Leicestershire County Council’s unique art and museum collections from the comfort of their own home.

The project, ‘Culture to You’, aims to bring the joy of art, heritage and culture directly to people’s doorsteps. Available to residents who, for a range of reasons, are unable to visit our museum and library sites, there is a variety of paintings, objects, books and creative activities to enjoy.  From 20th century artists to British artworks and quality museum collection objects, there’s something for everyone’s taste.

Run by the Culture Leicestershire service, it’s being trialled in Oadby and Wigston and has been made possible by funding from Arts Council England as part of the National Portfolio Organisation scheme.

Councillor Christine Radford, cabinet member for heritage, leisure and arts, said: “Access to the arts is vital for community wellbeing and has proven health and social benefits.

“This new service is a real string to our bow and breaks down the barriers that some people currently face, giving them the opportunity to access art and culture in a way that suits them, and at a time that meets their needs.

“From enjoying a creative activity inspired by our handling objects, through to borrowing an artwork from one of our collections, there’s plenty of choice on offer.”

Volunteers are also being sought to offer just a few hours a month to deliver the art and museum objects to people in their homes, supporting them to explore their connections to it.

Mrs Radford added: “With a larger group of volunteers, we’ll be able to offer the service more widely and throw a social lifeline to those who need it most. I’d encourage anyone with an interest to branch out and get involved in this rewarding new scheme, whether it is to use the service or to volunteer to support it.”

Culture to You is available to anyone who is unable to visit our museum and library sites in person. Items are loaned for a set period, are tailored to people’s interests and can involve regular visits and activities to help explore the artwork.

To register your interest in becoming a volunteer or to enquire about using the service, email culturetoyou@leics.gov.uk or phone 0116 305 1221.
