More than 97 per cent of Leicestershire children starting school for the first time have secured places at one of their top three choices.

Figures published today (Monday) show that more than 91 per cent of Leicestershire children have received an offer for their first preference school.

The county council is notifying parents about the offers from today after receiving nearly 7,500 applications for primary and infant school places received by the January closing date.

More than 96 per cent did so online, which is an increase of 1.7 per cent compared to last year and saves the council money by reducing stationery and postage costs.

Starting school for the first time is a big moment in children’s lives and we are delighted that the majority will be taught in their school of choice.

“We’ve seen a three per cent increase this year in the amount of children receiving places at their first preference school, which is great news.

“However, although this is a high percentage, we appreciate that some parents and carers will be disappointed.

“We are already working with these families and are confident most will secure alternative schools, while others may wish to discuss the option of how to appeal.

The offers relate to school places for this September for those children that will be starting infant or primary school in reception class, and those transferring from infant to junior school.

Parents that applied online will be able to view their decision by logging on with their username and password.

Others will receive letters from today advising them of the school place they have secured for their child.

A total of 7,463 on-time applications were received by the council of which:

- 91.7 per cent (6848) secured their top preference
- 4.5 per cent (339) secured their second choice
- One per cent (75) secured their third favourite
- 2.8 per cent (181) did not secure one of their choices and can appeal or take up a place at an alternative school.

Overall, 97.3 per cent (7,262) were offered a place at one of their top three choices of school.
