Where the birth, death, marriage or civil partnership took place
We can only issue copy certificates for births, marriages or deaths that took place in the county of Leicestershire (not Leicester City).
For events that took place within Leicester City, e.g. births in Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital, you’ll need to contact the City of Leicester Register Office.
Requesting a certificate
You can order certificates online. Before you begin, please read the following information:
Certificate costs
A copy certificate costs £12.50. There is a supplement for special delivery or overseas postage.
Both full and short birth certificates cost the same. The short certificate is not usually accepted by banks or the Passport Office.
An express pay and wait service is available, by appointment.
Search and order copy certificates online
Our online form allows you to search our records for a certificate and add it to your request, if found.
If there are no search results you can add the details manually to your request, and we'll check if it is available.
Payment is made online when you submit the form - no money will actually be taken at that time, but your card issuer may reserve the amount. When we complete your request, the amount will be taken only for certificates that are available.
Allow 3 to 5 working days from us receiving your request to processing your order.
Buy copy certificates online
If the record is not held by Leicestershire, the team will give instructions as to where it can be found and no fee will be taken. The researching family history page has more information on the birth and death registers we hold.
Short birth certificates cannot be ordered online - please contact us directly.
