Children are being encouraged to get reading for winter, after over 7,000 of Leicestershire’s young people took part in this year’s Reading Agency Summer Reading Challenge.
The theme of this year’s challenges is ‘Marvellous Makers’, aimed at sparking imaginations, with children encouraged to read books from Leicestershire County Council’s libraries and community-managed libraries.
More than 170,000 books and 8,000 e-books were borrowed throughout the summer, with young people encouraged to set their own targets and collect rewards along the way.
And now the county’s children are being spurred on to get reading again with the ‘Winter Mini’ through the cold months.
Leicestershire’s young people can pick up a range of digital badges as they progress through the challenge, as well as a certificate for reading three or more books.
“A love of books is so important to developing key skills in young people, and I hope as many young people as possible will be inspired to take up the Reading Agency’s Winter Mini Challenge.

“There are so many rewards, digital badges and certificates available for our children, and there is nothing better than reading for developing key skills and unleashing imaginations.”
