The second phase of a seven million pound initiative to reduce congestion and manage traffic flows at the M1 junction 22 roundabout and the A42 junction 13 roundabout begins next week (January 16 2017).
Significant changes to the A511, A512 and A42 junction 13 Flagstaff Roundabout near Ashby will be made ahead of expected higher traffic levels due to new housing developments in the area.
The Leicestershire County Council project which is partly funded by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership’s (LLEP) Local Growth Deal includes:
- Permanent traffic lights to manage traffic flow
- Widening of the carriageway to increase the number of lanes to major routes
- Improved shared use cycle and pedestrian links between Coalfield Way and Lountside
- The replacing of existing safety barriers at various locations
- Resurfacing of part of the slip road from the A42
Most of the work will take place overnight to avoid lane closures during the day and to minimise delays. Some daytime work is initially scheduled to take place during off peak times.
Motorists are advised however to allow extra time for journeys or to find alternative routes if possible during the developments.
This is a major investment in improving a very busy junction in the area. The improvements being made should greatly ease congestion around the Ashby De La Zouch/Coalville areas, helping drivers to avoid delays now and in the future, as Leicestershire continues to develop its offer to residents and businesses.
“The works, which will be completed in July 2017, have been planned to ease increased traffic levels expected from a growing economy.Person:Cllr Peter Osborne, cabinet member for highways
The preferred Contractor, Eurovia will be starting the improvement works from next Monday. The speed limit across the roundabout will be reduced to 40mph during the construction work. In the first week, works will be taking place in the highway verges.
From Monday 23 January, work is planned on the stretch of the A511 between the A42 junction 13 Flagstaff roundabout and the B587 Tescos roundabout.
This will involve off peak lane closures during the day. Work, which will require a one way restriction, is also planned to start on the stretch of Coalfield Way that goes from the A511 to the roundabout with Smithy Road.
Eurovia will have a temporary site compound near to Flagstaff roundabout off the A512.
Joanne Plews has been appointed as the dedicated public liaison link for both Eurovia and the County Council.
She will be distributing information leaflets, meeting with residents and businesses and putting up posters on notice boards in public places, so that up to date information is available throughout the construction period. Joanne Plews can be contacted by email at Joanne.Plews@eurovia.co.uk or on 07768 940 187.
Leicestershire County Council, Eurovia and Highways England are working together to give out information. Leicestershire County Council will be using twitter and their website to assist with the distribution of information.
