Directories to support you to get active

Use the Parks, Playgrounds and Open Spaces Directory to find new places to explore. To view places closest to where you live, go to the Location filter on the right hand side and add your postcode there.

Sense offers the Arts, Sports and Wellbeing Finder to search for accessible activities for children and young people with SEND.

National charities offering activities

Aerobility offers flying opportunities for people with disabilities both in the air and on the ground.

The ‘Look’ charity offers visually impaired children on-line activity groups and youth forums.

The Wetwheels Foundation provides the opportunity for disabled people to access the sea in fully accessible powerboats.

The Special Olympics offers sporting activities to people with a learning disability of all ages and abilities.

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) offers horse and carriage driving opportunities to people with a disability.

Run Together offers a database of trained guide runners to support people who are visually impaired to run.

The Dwarf Sports Association offers support and sporting opportunities for people with Dwarfism.

Level Water offers subsidised swimming lessons for children aged 4-11 years with a physical disability for visual or hearing impairment.

Support to access activities

CEA card

The UK Cinema Association (CEA) offers a card which allows a disabled cinema guest aged 8 years+ a complimentary ticket for somebody to go with them when they visit a participating cinema. There is a small charge for the card and it is available from their CEA website.

Autism friendly cinema screenings

Many cinemas have a relaxed ‘Autism friendly’ (all disabilities welcome) screening of many films with adjustments to make it accessible for all. The latest information can be found on the Dimensions website.

Reduced cost carer's ticket

Many leisure attractions offer a free or reduced cost carer’s ticket to accompany a disabled person. Check individual websites before travelling as requirements to qualify do vary. If you need to show evidence of a hidden disability, the Disabled ID card (DID) can be a help, so that you don’t need to take along any paperwork.

The Access Card

The Access Card shows leisure organisations quickly and discretely the support required and reasonable adjustments you will require to access their activity. It may also gain you access to concessionary ticket prices and free essential companion places. There is a small charge for a card which lasts for 3 years.

Through the eyes of… is a film project created by Culture Leicestershire aimed at supporting Foxton Canal Museum in reaching and engaging visitors, especially individuals and groups that may face barriers in accessing the museum.
